How to Delete Instagram Account — Complete 2025 Guide

Deleting your Instagram account is permanent and irreversible after Meta’s waiting period. Whether you’re leaving for privacy reasons, switching to another platform, or just taking a break, this guide walks you through the two main options (temporary deactivation vs. permanent deletion), how to back up your data first, and the precise steps to delete your account from both the mobile app and desktop. I also explain what happens to connected services (like Threads), how long deletion takes, and how to recover if you change your mind.

    Quick overview: deactivate vs delete

    • Temporarily deactivate: Hides your profile, photos, comments, and likes until you log back in. This is reversible at any time and a good choice if you want a break without losing content.
    • Permanently delete: Removes your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes, and followers. Instagram typically places a short grace period (often 30 days) during which you can log in to cancel the deletion; after that, content is permanently removed and cannot be recovered. For the authoritative procedure and timing, see Instagram’s deletion page.

Step 1 — Backup your data (highly recommended)

Before you delete anything, download a copy of your Instagram data — posts, stories, messages, and account info — so you can keep memories or migrate content elsewhere.

How to request your data (mobile or desktop):

    1. Open the Instagram app → Profile → Menu (≡) → Settings → Accounts Center / Your Activity / Security → Download your information, or on desktop go to instagram.com → Settings → Privacy and Security → Data Download / Request Download.
    2. Enter the email address where you want to receive the download link and confirm your password.
    3. Instagram prepares your data and sends a download link (this can take up to 48 hours or longer depending on volume). Save the ZIP file to your computer and extract it.

Why this matters: Instagram’s data export gives you images, captions, comments, and message history in a machine-readable format — useful for archive or migration to other services.

Step 2 — Decide: deactivate for now or delete permanently?

    Ask yourself:

    • Do I want the option to come back with everything intact? → Deactivate.
    • Am I sure I want to remove everything permanently (and lose access to any connected Threads profile)? → Delete. (Note: deleting Instagram can affect linked services like Threads; check Meta’s support pages for specifics.)

If you’re unsure, deactivation is the safer first move. It hides your profile and content but preserves everything for later reactivation.

Step 3 — How to temporarily deactivate your Instagram account

You can usually deactivate from the web or via the Accounts Center in the app:

    From mobile (Accounts Center route):

    1. Open Instagram → Profile → Menu → Settings & privacy → Accounts Center.
    2. Tap Personal details → Account Ownership and Control → Deactivation or Deletion.
    3. Choose the account, select Temporarily deactivate, follow the prompts and confirm.

    From desktop:

    1. Log in at instagram.com → Profile → Edit profile → Temporarily disable my account (if available) and follow prompts.

Temporarily deactivated accounts are hidden from other users and will return when you log in again.

Step 4 — How to permanently delete your Instagram account (exact steps)

There are two common methods: using Meta’s Accounts Center (app) or Instagram’s dedicated deletion page (desktop/mobile browser). The dedicated deletion URL is the official approach Instagram documents for permanent removal.

A — Delete via Accounts Center (mobile app)

    1. Open the Instagram app → Profile → Menu → Settings & privacy → Accounts Center.
    2. Tap Personal details → Account Ownership and Control → Deactivation or Deletion.
    3. Select the profile you want to remove and choose Delete account (or Permanent deletion) and follow the on-screen prompts.
    4. You’ll be asked to re-enter your password and optionally give a reason for leaving. Confirm to begin the deletion process.

B — Delete using the web (official deletion page)

    1. Log in securely at instagram.com on a desktop or mobile browser.
    2. Visit Instagram’s Delete Your Account page (official Help Center link). Select a reason, re-enter your password, and confirm permanent deletion. Instagram will hide your account during the waiting period.

Step 5 — What happens after you confirm deletion?

    • Instagram usually applies a grace period (commonly 30 days) during which logging back in cancels the deletion. After the grace period, your account and all content are permanently deleted from Instagram’s active servers and you can’t recover it. Some copies may remain in backup for a short time but are not accessible publicly. Always download your data beforehand if you want a copy.
    • If you have other Meta services linked (e.g., Threads), deleting Instagram can affect those connections — verify the exact relationship from Meta’s help pages before deleting.

    Troubleshooting & recovery tips

    • Changed your mind within grace period? Log back in and follow the prompts to cancel deletion.
    • Can’t log in to cancel? Use password reset and account recovery options before the end of the grace period.
    • Account disabled by Instagram: This is different from deletion; you may be able to appeal a disabled account via Instagram’s Help Center.

    Privacy checklist before you go

    • Revoke third-party app access (Settings → Security → Apps and Websites).
    • Remove linked payment methods or subscriptions.
    • Notify followers/contacts if you want them to have alternate ways to reach you.
    • If you want to keep specific photos public elsewhere, re-post them to another service before deletion.
